Lorraine Kuhn

Team: Volleyball

Year Received: 1978

Bio: Lorraine came to the Yukon right after University in 1970 and began teaching at Takhini Elementary school for her first couple years as an educator.

Lorraine, early in her teaching career, worked with Dave Stockdale to continue to grow the Polar Games at the elementary school level, to engage kids in healthy physical activity and organized sports.

From 1973-1979 and 1985-2001 she was the physical education teacher and coach of many things at FH Collins secondary school where she remained and coached multiple teams for generations of young people. She found her happy place which was a deciding factor in her consideration of playing for the Canadian Women's National volleyball team as she would have had to commute to Alberta for the training camps

Lorraine attended her first Arctic Winter Games in 1972 held in Whitehorse. She participated in volleyball and was able to build a solid team. The senior official for volleyball at the games was Lorne Sawula, who in later years coached the Canadian Women's National volleyball team. Lorraine had him come back to Whitehorse in the seventies to put on player development clinics. Once the AWG competition was done in 1972, Lorne told her he thought their team would receive an invitation to play in the Canadian Championships in Edmonton, AB the following week given their gold medal performance over Alaska.
